New playground to be added to Chadick Park
Apr 12, 2018City of McAlester Purchasing and Fixed Asset Officer Shelia Norman said a committee was set up for the playground project and the group has worked on the project for more than a year."The committee is deeply grateful to the Puterbaugh Foundation and trustees Steve Taylor, Lucy Smith and Cara Bland for the generous donation," Norman said. "This ADA inclusive playground is such a wonderful addition to our community. We are so excited to be able to provide a place where all children with special needs can interact with their friends and family." Norman said the new playground will include something for every child who has a special need. "We are going to try to cover all the areas we can at this new playground," Norman said.The committee met on Thursday to look at the playground design bids that came from several different companies. A total of 12 bids were submitted. The playgrounds included activities such as a rain wheel, climber, spinner, crawl tunnels, talk tubes and more. The new playground will be located at Chadick Park adjacent to the existing park.Norman said they chose to build the playground there so all the children can interact."We want all the children to be able to play together," Norman said.Norman said there are approximately 485 special needs children in the McAlester public school system and 1,200 in Pittsburg County."This will be a much-needed addition to our parks," Norman said.
